why the language of divorce matters
Rachel Chisholm, Partner at The Mediation Space and Barrister at 4PB, has written a guest article for Wealth Briefing looking at how the traditional language used in the process of separation and divorce can contribute to adversarial feelings.
Divorce is a time of crisis. Separation stirs painful and complex emotions. For some, it may be easier to blame the other or focus on anger, rather than process their own feelings of loss, fear or guilt. Thinking and reasoning become very difficult in such a heightened state of emotion. Couples and families need the support of the professionals involved along their separation journey to reframe their approach into something more solution focused and less harmful.
Using the 2022 report, 'Language Matters' from the think tank Family Solutions Group UK, Rachel puts forward a case for mediators and other legal professionals to reframe the language used to encourage co-operation and solution-focused thinking.
